Vicodin and Percocet Recall on the Way?

Posted On: July 1, 2009 by

CNN reports that an FDA government advisory panel voted yesterday to recommend eliminating prescription drugs that combine acetaminophen with narcotics -- such as Vicodin and Percocet -- because of their risk for overdose and for severe liver injury.

I'm glad to see the FDA is looking at the safety and efficacy of existing drugs. There is no question that Vicodin and Perocet are misused and overprescribed. My only fear with a recall or withdrawal of these drugs for what I'm guessing is the 5% of people on Perocet or Vicodin that really need the drug. They are in great pain, are not finding relief elsewhere, and the benefits of the drugs far exceed the risk of overdose or liver damage for that patient.

I dont know what kind of politics are being played out right now but there are using the death of Michael Jackson and his drugs as a means to slide this by the public. What are people going to do when they have high fevers in the middle of the night that wont go down. Or have you ever broken a bone or had a wisdom tooth pulled? Do you think acetaminophen will help you then?? I know it wont! Im really starting to worry about this country and I hope the FDA does NOT take the advice of this panel

this nuts yeah people will get liver damage it happens with alcohlo, too so you cant do this I am 24 years old I have tried almost every kinda pain pill vicodine works I have been taking it for about an year for pain that i have from back surgry, I can't afford pain epiderl injections that cost $2000 an shot we have tried every altrutive , i have never od from these also what happened to that poor girl sucks but this isn't the answer

Just as I suspected, acetaminophen has killed more people yearly than Marijuana ever will! Why is Marijuana still illegal?

If high doses of acetaminophen cause liver damage, it only makes sense to reduce the dosage. I would think doctors could easily prescribe the other drugs contained in Vicodin and Percocet separately from acetaminophen.

I absolutly have to have Vicodin for my severe DDD and for the FDA to pull these drugs is unbelievable. I am unable to walk, sit, or stand for more than a few minutes, with the help of these drugs. I even participated in a clinical study this last winter on Vicodin ES and all of my liver profiles were fine. I believe that the problem comes in with these types of drugs as people have a tendency to take more Tylenol with these meds and it has been well know since Tylenol came out on the market that it causes liver damage and that is why last year Tylenol put a disclaimer on their commercials telling people to not exceed the regular dose. Doctors may need to stress not to take any other pain meds with Vicodin and Percocet but to pull them off the market for people like me who desperatly need them is savage. Get the uneducated politicians out of this battle and let the doctors decide.

Vicodin and Percocet both contain two types of pain relievers one a narcotic and then tylonal or acetaminophen pulling these two off the martket wouldn't be as bad as it seems. Drs. can prescribe alternative meds. that contain less of or no tylonal at all. So nobady needs to panic the addition factor is less a risk than the liver damage because in all honesty you can become addited to almost any drug out there even otc drugs. But I just wanted to say there are alternative to these two drugs the only people this would really hurt is the manufactures people who are in pain will have alternitive meds to combat their pain. I work in a pharmacy and my boyfriend suffers from degenertive disc so for the last five yesrs we have become very familar with pain meds. vicodin and percocet are only two of many and trust me if your level of pain can be stopped by these two drugs it is not nearly as severe as it could be and you will survive without them. Neither of these are strong enough to combat severe pain maybe if you had a wisdom tooth pulled but beleive me there are other pain meds that are safer and better than these two.

I've been prescribed Vicodin on two separate occasions (once by a doctor for a nasty ear infection, the other by a dentist following wisdom tooth surgery) and on both occasions I was given thorough instructions on not using it in combination with other acetaminophen products. So, are there doctors and pharmacies not adequately warning, or are we just trying to make sure that people who won't follow directions can't hurt themselves when they don't follow directions?

What about the crazy people like me who have numerous medication allergies? I have arthritis, recurrent bursitis and tendonitis, shoulder impingements in Both shoulders, Raynaud's Syndrome, and cold intolerance. The last time I saw my Rheumatologists Nurse Practitioner she refused to refill my Vicodin and gave me Tramadol instead. After taking this medication for 5 days I had a SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION and THANK GOD I INSISTED on a new EPI-PEN RX because this time my allergic reaction affected my BREATHING
!!!!!! I almost had to have a TRACH!!!!!!! I am now up to 8 DIFFERENT MEDICATION ALLERGIES 8 DIFFERENT MEDICATION ALLERGIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I TRULY HOPE THE FDA RECONSIDERS THIS FAST AS VICODIN IS THE ONLY MEDICINE THAT I KNOW I AM NOT ALLERGIC TO AND THAT REALLY WORKS FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PLEASE HELP PEOPLE LIKE ME TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO TAKE THE ONLY SAFE MEDICINE AND THE ONE THAT WORKS FOR ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You people need to stop freaking out. If you're taken off percocet, you could easily go on low dose oxycontin, 10mg or 20mg for example. I would be extremely happy to see this happen. Just because there is no vicodin doesn't mea you're going to have to get $2000.00 shots. You'll just be put on a better more efficient form of the same narcotic you were already on. This is a good thing.

i use the drug vicodin and experienced high liver enzymes stomach pain and erectile dysfunction

My poor friend Bea, given pain pills with acetominophen at 500 mg. a pill. She was directed to take six a day. I told her to go to a pain clinic as she would get liver damage from all that acetominophin. She did. Thank God. 30,000 mg. of acetaminaphen a day? What are they thinking?
